Fique is the national fiber of Colombia. It is a natural fiber that comes from the leaves of the fique plant, “Furcraea andina”, native to Andean regions of Colombia. The indigenous communities from the Colombian Andes extracted and used fique for several centuries to make garments, ropes and many other applications. Fique is well-known for its strength and durability.
Fique fibers are dyed with natural pigments by means of a boiling process, creating colorful spools of fique fibers that are used by the local artisans to create these one-of-a-kind handbags.
