Glass beads were not used until the colonists brought them from Europe 500 years ago, but they quickly became part of Indigenous cultures. Today glass beads, particularly fine seed beads, are the primary materials for traditional beaders of many tribes. Beading is not simple. In fact, it can take several months to complete a single beadwork.

This particular type of jewelry is designed by Embera artisans from Risaralda. The Emberas are an indigenous group that inhabit eastern Panama and northwestern Colombia. For centuries their people lived semi-nomadic lives as hunter-gatherers and fishermen moving constantly through the most remote parts of the rainforest between Panama and Colombia. They cover their chests with intricate plastic bead necklaces and ornamental collars made with dozens of coins. Women also like to add a bit of red color on their faces with the natural dye of achiote.

Nowadays some of the Embera communities live also in the cities but are still very skilled crafters. Their beadwork designs include animals, trees, rivers and stars that represent sacred spirits that inhabit the Universe. Each piece is beautifully created with a unique design.
